Envirothon Starts This Week
Envirothon is a natural resource competition program for middle and high school students. It is sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Envirothon is a great extracurricular activity that promotes environmental awareness, independent study, teamwork, and fun!
Envirothon Team members are responsible for studying and learning a curriculum that covers five areas: soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, and current environmental issues. Meetings will be held weekly on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:15 (times may vary). Guest speakers will be arranged for most meetings and students will be expected to do independent studying/learning of the curriculum at home. Guest speakers and field trips are designed to reinforce information from the curriculum. The regional competition is usually held in March and the state competition in April.
Students involved in other extra-curricular activities such as sports, Battle of the Books, etc. can still participate in Envirothon. They will be expected to attend meetings whenever possible and put in extra time at home preparing for competition.
The information letter will be in the front office for students who are interested - they can pick up the letters during lunch. Or, they can get a copy from Mrs. Clark in 6th grade, Mr. Tomlin in 7th grade, or Mrs. Streets in 8th grade.
The first Envirothon Meeting will be Wednesday, September 24, 3:00-4:15.
If you have any questions regarding Envirothon, feel free to contact Mrs. Streets at dstreets@chatham.k12.nc.us. You can also visit the Envirothon website at www.ncenvirothon.org.

8th Grade Field Trip Scholarships Available
This is a reminder that the 8th grade will be taking a field trip to Besty-Jeff Penn 4-H Center in Reidsville either October 13-15 or October 20-22. The cost of the field trip is $120 and includes meals.
Students will gain valuable team building, collaboration, leadership, and communication skills from the trip. Due to the cost of the trip, the school has worked closely with the PTSA to create a scholarship opportunity that will help to alleviate the cost of the trip for 50 students.
By working at the PTSA Thrift Store, 50 students can earn up to $100 for the field trip in October.  (All money will be paid to the school. No money will be paid to individuals for any reason.) All hours worked at the PTSA Thrift Store must be completed between now and September 30.
Click on the links below for more information about the trip and also information regarding the opportunity to earn scholarship money. If you would like for your student or family to participate in this opportunity to earn scholarship money toward the trip, please contact the school to provide his/her name. Feel free to contact the school with any additional questions.
